Why Visit Liberia

Liberia works as both a destination and a gateway — within about 30 minutes of downtown, visitors can reach pristine Pacific beaches, an active volcano, or one of Costa Rica’s most impressive waterfalls, making it one of the most efficient bases in Guanacaste for combining beach time with adventure.

Liberia’s own downtown, centered on its whitewashed colonial church and shaded main square, is small but walkable, with a handful of local sodas (family-run eateries) serving Guanacaste specialties like corn-based tamales and gallo pinto for travelers who want a quieter stop before or after the beach.

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano

This active volcano’s national park offers hiking trails, bubbling mud pots, and natural hot springs, and is one of the most popular day trips from Liberia.

Llanos de Cortez Waterfall

A short drive from the city, this wide, easily accessible waterfall drops into a swimmable pool and is a popular stop for cooling off between adventures.

Beaches of the Papagayo Peninsula

Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are both about 30 minutes away, offering calmer bays that are good for swimming as well as sunset dinners along the water.

Santa Rosa National Park

North of Liberia, this park protects dry tropical forest and a historic site, with hiking trails and access to surf beaches like Playa Naranjo.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from late December to mid-April, brings Guanacaste’s most consistently sunny, rain-free weather in the country, making it the most popular time to visit. The green season (May-November) still offers plenty of sunshine, with May-July typically seeing short afternoon showers and August-November bringing more sustained rainfall. Temperatures stay warm year-round, generally 82-95°F (28-35°C) in the day and 75-80°F (24-27°C) at night.

How to Get There

Liberia is served directly by Guanacaste Airport (LIR), also known as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, which has direct international flights and puts most of the region’s beaches and national parks within an hour’s drive. A rental car is the most convenient way to explore independently, though shared shuttles, taxis, and public buses are also available from downtown Liberia.

Travel Tips

Because so many attractions are 30-60 minutes outside the city, renting a car is worth considering even for a short stay. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water, since daytime temperatures stay high year-round, and pack a light rain layer if visiting during the green season.
